Walking

I really like to walk. I think you should give it a try.

I mean it. It’s a great way to get your heart rate up. I prefer to do it outside, because I also like trees. There’s something about being in nature that calms me down. I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’ve been stuck in a box (house, car, school, cube, …) most of my life.

One of my favorite things about walking is that it’s pretty accessible to most people. I’m really sorry for those of you who can’t for some reason or another. Truly, I am. For anyone who can walk, I say just give it a try to get started.

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I feel like the longer I walk the more I want to do it. It’s like a flywheel - eventually you’ve built up enough momentum that you’re generating the will to continue instead of getting more tired. It’s weird, but I really like the feeling. Makes me feel strong and accomplished. Who doesn’t want that?

I recommend you get good walking shoes. I’m quite partial to Nike’s Roshe Ones. They’re great looking, simple (minimalist, remember?), a good value at around $80 from anywhere you can buy shoes, breathe well (I live in Austin, TX), and clean easily. I also like running tights. They’re stupid comfy, don’t stink after a few walks, look cool, and actually keep you warm in the shade and comfy in the sun.

Look for more writings from me about great places to walk in Austin, TX. My wife and I will be checking them out soon (now that it’s getting warmer). She’s the best photographer in the world, too. We’ll share some shots of interesting things we see on a walks so you can check them out for yourself.
